Wow Shrinkage on the test locks--Yikes!!

Greetings,
As you may recall I had 4 Sisterlock 'test' locks put in although was getting another individuals braid style. This has given me an ample amount of time to see what these locks will look like and behave for me...as EVERYONE's experience and finish product will be a little different-or so they say. After 30 days my little babies all 6-5 inch babies (that have shrunk down to 3") are doing well. They have unraveled somewhat-but as I was informed my hair a "3c" really likes locks and will do fine through this process. I can see where shrinkage could be a major issue. I will be sure to braid and band EVERY time I was. I'm also thinking of coloring my hair pre-sisterlock installation which is scheduled for early January. My hair which has NEVER been colored just wants a litte highlight or depth as I undergo the first 6 months of the locking process that seem to be the most crucial. HELP!!!

I'm sooo excited about getting sisterlocks! I thought that I was going to lose a considerable about of length from the start-but I'm sure that that will occur as the dreaded shrinkage phase that EVERYONE talks about. In the meantime, I have 4 baby/test locks, 2 in a regular "4" pattern the others in the "reverse 4" pattern. Since I haven't a clue what these pattern really mean yet I guess I will just read and learn as much as I can. The dilemma now is the various length of my hair. I've got some hair that's long as 8"-9" in the top and others that are just short as 5-6" in the back (right were the test locks were installed). Since my loctician says that she would like to cut my hair prior to the install in mid January (and charge a few extra bucks too for any additional length) I am tempted to get some of this hair cut and colored before hand. What do you think?

Although I had planned my SL installed to conicide with Barrack taking office-I'm might not be able to wait that long...I want to convert now..I wanna be free yall!!

Hello My Sister's,

I've started this blog because I believe that something unique to share with all of my sisters in cyberspace who are either wearing their hair naturally or considering the installation of Sisterlocks i.e. “micro-locs”. You see I’ve been chemical free for thirteen, yes 13 years without a perm, although I have that traditionally tightly coiled/kinky hair we black women have come to love and hate. Girlfriends, I can honestly say that I have worn every braid, two strand twist, faux loc, cornrow feed-in, tree braid, sew-in weave and ty-zillion braid style known to woman-kind and I’ve got the pictures to prove it! My continuing hair saga has been almost as humorous as it has been complicated due to my profession. Currently I work in law enforcement; hence I am subjected to its archaic culture which still thrives on male-domination and discrimination. This unique work environment is at times filled with a palpable level of disdain and resentment toward its female members-regardless of how hard they may work, countless number of citizens they help and sacrifices they make while serving in the line of duty. But I digress, this blog won’t be about law enforcement-it will be about a journey to remain dedicated to the glorious dark brown coils placed on my head so many years ago and what, exactly, I should do with them next. As a matter of fact, I am going for my first Sisterlock consultation next week at a fairly notable salon here in the Metro-Detroit area and I am bracing myself for one helluva price tag to lock up 9” or so inches of fairly thick unprocessed hair.
